Yee Leng Xiong Launches Campaign for State Treasurer

WAUSAU — Today, Yee Leng Xiong, Marathon County Supervisor, D.C. Everest School Board Treasurer, and nonprofit executive, announced his candidacy for Wisconsin State Treasurer, pledging to bring fiscal accountability, transparency, and real-world budget experience to an office responsible for overseeing more than $1.3 billion in public trust funds.

“Most people don’t know what the State Treasurer does — and that’s exactly the problem,” said Xiong. “This office isn’t ceremonial. It’s a responsibility. The Treasurer helps oversee Wisconsin’s school trust funds, supports low-interest loans that help communities build infrastructure, and works to return unclaimed money to families. Wisconsin deserves a Treasurer who has actually managed public budgets and understands how every dollar affects real people.”

In 2018, Wisconsin voters rejected a Republican attempt to remove the office of State Treasurer, affirming the importance of an independent, statewide watchdog over public funds.

“As Treasurer, you don’t answer to the Governor or the Legislature — you answer directly to the people,” Xiong continued. “I’m running to be an independent voice for taxpayers and to make sure Wisconsin’s money is managed responsibly, transparently, and in the public interest.”

Born in Wausau to refugee parents who fled persecution, Xiong learned early that freedom comes with responsibility. He has spent his career managing public resources and investing in communities at every level of government. In 2014, he made history as the first Hmong American elected to the D.C. Everest School Board, where he currently serves as Board Treasurer. Since 2016, he has served as Marathon County Supervisor, helping make tough budget decisions that impact local services and infrastructure. As Executive Director of the Hmong American Center, Xiong saved the organization from closure and grew its budget to $1.9 million, expanding services for families across the region.

Xiong would be the first Hmong American elected to statewide office in Wisconsin.

The Democratic primary election for Wisconsin State Treasurer will be held on August 11, 2026, with the general election on November 3, 2026. To learn more about Yee Leng Xiong and his campaign, visit www.yeeforwi.vote.
